Poor Lexie had a rough start in life, but things are finally turning around for this sweet and goofy girl. She was dumped by her former owners and found on the side of an interstate in Arkansas with an injured back leg on a rainy January night. A kind woman picked her up and brought her to the local shelter where the vets determined that her rear knee had been crushed in a hit-and-run and would need to be amputated, so she made the long road trip out to Colorado to the Great Pyrenees Rescue and Sanctuary to receive surgical care and find her new home!
Lexie is somewhere between 18 months and 2 years old and has lots of enthusiasm and energy. She's small for a Pyr -- only about 78 pounds. Despite the sad times in her past, she’s the happiest Pyr you’ll ever meet, and her darling face and beautiful eyes win over everyone she meets. Her amputation has healed, and this strong and darling girl gets around just fine on three legs. Dogs, including Great Pyrs, do really well as tripods. Lexie isn’t even aware anything is missing and just wants to run and play and cuddle. She’s a total lover and wants nothing more than to curl up on the couch with you in the evening and sleep with you at night. She loves to give and get kisses, is very smart, and knows several commands, including sit, stay, come (when she wants to as is typical for her breed), down, and leave it. She needs a home that will reinforce her good manners, as she’s still a bit of a puppy, but she’s got a great foundation. She’s very smart and eager to please.
Lexie likes having lots of people to love her, and would do well in an active house with a couple or family with older children. She will need a dedicated person or people, as she has the biggest heart and really wants to devote herself completely to her new family. She thinks cats are for chasing, so might do best in a feline-free home. Her past life most likely did not offer much opportunity for socialization, so she is also a little shy in new environments. Lexie needs slow initial introductions to new things and people (especially men), but once she warms up quickly and becomes very outgoing and affectionate with people she likes. This slight insecurity will surely fade away as she comes to feel comfortable in her new home. She also loves her crate and takes quickly to routine.
Lexie is such a sweetheart and ready to be loved and have a home to call her own. She will make a fantastic and loyal companion to the person or people willing to commit to her and give her some long-overdue stability and comfort. She is one of a kind and is very gregarious for a Pyr. If you’re looking for a smart, polite, and active girl with a good sense of humor and a love for petting, hugs, and treats, come meet Lexie today. Her huge smile is impossible to resist. You'll fall in love and want to take her home with you right away!
